Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid found in natural sources like algae, shrimp, and salmon. It activates key cellular pathways such as Nrf2/ARE, increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) that protect skin cells from oxidative stress. Astaxanthin inhibits NF-κB signaling to reduce inflammation, preserving skin integrity by lowering pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1α, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8). It stimulates the TGF-β pathway, promoting collagen synthesis critical for skin firmness and elasticity, and inhibits matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1), an enzyme that degrades collagen and leads to wrinkle formation.
