Winter and Seasonal-Change Lip Routine: Daytime and Bedtime Lip Balm Are Different
When cold winds blow and you start turning on the heat, your lips are the first to react. Even with the same lip balm, changing how you apply it during the day and at night can help you stay much less dry.
Why lips get drier in winter
It’s cold and the air is dry outside, while indoor humidity drops because of the heating. Lips have almost no sebaceous glands, so it’s difficult for them to create their own oil barrier, which is why they’re the first to feel these environmental changes.
Daytime routine: thinly, often
-
Apply a thin layer once before going out.
-
Reapply after wearing a mask or eating.
-
When your lips feel tight, don’t wet them with saliva; apply another layer of lip balm.
-
If you’re wearing lip makeup, apply a thin layer of lip balm and put it on 1~2 minutes later.
Nighttime routine: generously, leave it on
-
After cleansing, gently pat away moisture and apply it before your lips dry out.
-
Apply about twice as much as you would during the day, and go to sleep without wiping it off.
-
In the morning, gently remove any remaining lip balm when you wash your face with lukewarm water.
Adjust your indoor environment too
-
Try using a humidifier or hanging up a damp towel to keep indoor humidity at 40~60%.
-
Many people say that drinking water often helps reduce lip tightness.
