Lips burn too. Do you keep a UV lip balm separate from your night balm?

On Girls Channel, someone wrote that the sun had got stronger and their lips had dried out badly after time outdoors, and asked for lip balms with UV protection (March 2025).

What came up in the replies:

  • Picks were scattered: Nivea, Orbis, Muji, NOV and MiMC's mineral colour lip, among others. One person noted most drugstore balms sit around SPF 20 and was surprised to see an SPF 35 one.

  • The most interesting question: do you use a separate UV balm for the day and a moisturising balm for night? Many said yes, focusing on hydration at night with things like petroleum jelly or a lip mask.

  • One person said a balm they owned carried a label warning to avoid sun for several hours after applying, so they moved it to night-only use. In other words, read the label.

  • Several with sensitive lips said every UV balm they tried left them rough or chalky, so they went back to plain balms. A few said their facial skin is fine but their lips are the sensitive part.

  • The suggestion that a face mask covers the mouth area got the reply that you then tan in the shape of the mask.

Desk note: The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher. Balm comes off easily when you eat and drink, so reapplying after meals is a useful habit. If UV balms don't agree with your lips, a wide-brimmed hat that shades the lower face helps too.

Do you carry a separate UV lip balm, or do you just take your sunscreen over your lips?
