Dejavu vs Heroine Make: which mascara actually holds a curl on straight lashes?

A head-to-head in r/AsianBeauty. After seeing glowing results from Dejavu's Lash Knockout, the poster picked one up in Japan to challenge their long-time Heroine Make Long & Curl. Within minutes the curl started dropping, and by evening their lashes were straight with smudging underneath. Heroine Make, by contrast, holds all day for them unless it is very humid. They asked how Dejavu fans make it work.

What the replies said

  • A big "Heroine Make is my holy grail" chorus, especially from people with very straight lashes who have tried and returned from many others.

  • Several had the same Dejavu experience: nice at first, then drooping and flaking over the day. A couple still like Dejavu for bottom lashes or casual days.

  • Film vs waterproof: some find Heroine's film ("Advanced Film") version smudges in heat and humidity, while the waterproof one lasts much longer but needs a proper oil remover. Powdering the lids and under-eyes helped some.

  • Other names that held curls for people: Clio Kill Lash (hard to remove), Judydoll's curling formula (holds, but less length), and a Taiwanese brand's long mascara.

  • Not everyone agreed: a few get panda eyes from Heroine Make, and one person suspected smudging copies came from unofficial marketplace sellers.

Desk note: Curl hold depends a lot on lash direction, oiliness and climate, which is why the same tube can be a holy grail for one person and a smudge for another. If you switch to a long-wear waterproof formula, plan the removal too: soften it with an oil or dedicated remover instead of rubbing, since tugging at lashes is how many people lose them.

    1. A tip for reading the box in a Japanese drugstore: film-type mascaras are usually marked お湯でオフ ("comes off with warm water") and slide off in little tubes when you rinse. Anything labelled ウォータープルーフ (waterproof) resists sweat and tears but almost always needs an oil cleanser or eye makeup remover. If you smudge easily, try film; if curl is your top priority, go waterproof and plan the removal.
