If I can smell my own scalp, can other people smell it too?

Someone on theqoo's beauty board said that now and then they catch a whiff of their own scalp and wondered whether others notice it too. They were already using a scalp brush and a hair vinegar rinse.

What the replies said:

  • Many answered bluntly: if you can smell it, others can too.

  • Others pushed back a little: sometimes you notice it and family or friends don't, so ask someone close to check.

  • The most common fix was drying. People kept repeating: lift the hair section by section and dry right down to the scalp.

  • Water temperature came up. Both very hot and very cold water were questioned, with lukewarm recommended, and one reply warned that a shampoo that strips too much oil can dry the scalp out.

  • A few suggested checking for seborrheic dermatitis.

  • Several said a hair vinegar, scalp tonic or vinegar mist helped with the smell.

The thread's center of gravity: fix washing and drying habits before buying more products.

Desk note: The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises concentrating shampoo on the scalp rather than the full length of the hair, and says people with straight hair and an oily scalp may want to wash every day. If flaking, itching or redness keeps coming back, something else may be going on, so have a dermatologist take a look.

    1. According to the AAD, seborrheic dermatitis on the scalp shows up as white-to-yellowish scale that can be dry or greasy, and it tends to itch. Many skin conditions cause an itchy rash, so similar-looking symptoms can have different causes. If odor comes with this kind of flaking or itch, getting a dermatologist's diagnosis is often quicker than cycling through hair products. AAD — Seborrheic dermatitis
