Going in just for a haircut: should you wash your hair first?
A small but surprisingly divisive question came up in DCInside's hairstyle gallery. The poster had washed their hair right before bed, so it shouldn't smell. Can they just get up, go for a cut and wash afterwards? Isn't washing before and again after a bit much?
What the replies said

The first reply was short: washing first is basic courtesy.

Someone countered that most salons will shampoo you before the cut if it's needed.
-
Others pointed out you might not notice your own smell, and that some simply dislike going out with greasy hair, so they wash anyway.

A commenter who seemed to work in a salon put it this way: arriving with very greasy hair washed is appreciated, but if hair is in bad shape the stylist can shampoo it first, and shouldn't resent doing so. Salons where a pre-cut shampoo is standard tend to be pricier ones; even franchise branches vary.

The same person added that stylists can tell busy from lazy, and grumbling over a missed wash is on them. Overall: washing first is nice, not washing isn't rude.
Desk note: Whether a cut includes a shampoo, or a blow-dry at the end, varies from salon to salon. If your scalp is oily that day or you've got wax or spray in, asking 'Can I get a shampoo before the cut?' when you book saves awkwardness on both sides. If you have any scalp irritation or cuts, mention that up front too.
When you only need a trim, do you wash your hair first or just go?
