3 Things to Check When Choosing a Lip Balm at a Pharmacy

When you stand in front of the lip balm section at a pharmacy, you’ll see several lip balms that look similar. Here are three things worth checking before choosing based only on price or brand.

1. What’s near the top of the ingredient list?

Ingredients are listed in order of how much is in the product. The first 3–5 ingredients tell you what kind of lip balm it is.

• Oils and butters near the top: If ingredients like squalane or shea butter appear near the top, it’s the kind that softly coats your lips.
• Vaseline (petrolatum) near the top: This is the kind that forms a firm barrier on the surface.
• Are the amounts listed as numbers?: If there’s a number, such as "Squalane 200,000ppm," it’s easier to compare with other products.

2. Does it contain fragrance or menthol?

This doesn’t matter if you like fragrance or a cooling sensation, but if your lips are sensitive or fragrance bothers you, check the ingredient list for 'fragrance' and 'menthol.' You can tell right away from the ingredient list, even if the box doesn’t say "fragrance-free."

3. When will you use the lip balm?

• For frequent application during the day: A stick or tube that spreads thinly and isn’t too shiny
• Before bed: A pot or balm-type product that’s good for applying a thick layer
• Before lip makeup: A type that absorbs quickly so your lipstick doesn’t slide around

If you want one product for both day and night, a formula that can be applied either thinly or thickly is convenient.
