Visiting grandma for the holidays: makeup or bare face?
Around Chuseok, Korea's autumn harvest holiday, someone on theqoo's beauty board asked a simple question: when you visit your grandmother or relatives, do you go bare-faced or put on at least a little makeup? It was a throwaway question, but it pulled in more than twenty answers.
The replies split into four camps:
-
Full makeup, always: some said they simply want to look nice, others that you might end up at a café, so comfy clothes are fine but the face gets done.
-
Keep it light: brows and skin only, or skin and lips only. One person just fills in their brows and wears glasses.
-
Sunscreen only: a sizable group wears sunscreen and nothing else, or just a tinted lip balm.
-
Nothing at all: a few admitted they show up in the most comfortable state possible.
-
Interestingly, several people said dressing up too much gets comments from relatives, and some skip makeup when they are going to help with the cooking. On the other side, one person does makeup because their mom will say something if they don't.
The most common answer ended up being "light enough that nobody notices." The tinted lip balm turned out to be the quiet star of holiday makeup.
Desk note: Holidays often mean long hours on the road or outdoors. Even if you skip makeup, pack sunscreen, and on a long trip a sun cushion or sun stick makes reapplying easy. If you'll be standing over a hot stove frying holiday pancakes, a lighter base may feel more comfortable than a heavy one.
Which camp were you this holiday?
