Do you have a forever shampoo, or do you rotate?

On 82cook's free board, someone noted how wildly shampoo prices vary and asked whether, as with skincare, cheap and expensive ones barely differ. The question "do you have a shampoo you've settled on?" drew nearly thirty replies.

What the replies said:

  • The first reply said price does make some difference, that you should match shampoo to your scalp, and recommended weakly acidic formulas.

  • Two people have settled on Head & Shoulders: one because other shampoos made their scalp itch, the other after nearly twenty years of always coming back to it. On the other side, someone said cheap supermarket shampoos had given them itching and advised spending a bit more.

  • Avalon Organics, Aromatica, Ryo and Kundal were all named as settled favorites.

  • A sizable group does the opposite and rotates on purpose: taking breaks even from products that work, or keeping separate summer and winter shampoos.

  • One person with an itchy, inflamed scalp tried many pricey shampoos; each switch helped for about two weeks, and they finally settled on a solid shampoo bar.

  • Another comment stood out: after hopping between shampoos because of hair loss, they ended up using bar soap.

No single answer won, but nearly everyone agreed with one line: what matters is whether it suits your scalp, not the price.

Desk note: The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends concentrating shampoo on the scalp rather than the whole length of the hair, and applying conditioner to the ends if your hair is fine or straight. Its guidance is based on scalp condition and hair type, not price. If itching, flaking or hair loss keeps going, see a dermatologist before switching shampoos again.

Do you have a shampoo you've settled on, or a rotation that works?
