Landing in Seoul at dawn: where do you get breakfast and watch the city wake up?

A family arriving in Seoul around 7:30 in the morning, with small children tired from the flight, asked on the Tripadvisor Seoul forum: where is a good place to watch the city come to life, and is there a market known for breakfast that's open that early?

What the replies said

  • The first answer pointed to the knife-cut noodle alley in Namdaemun Market.

  • Another traveller who had reached Seoul Station even earlier described their morning: leave the bag in a locker, watch the trains, walk the elevated park built on an old overpass, then climb towards Namsan as the streets filled up.

  • For finding that walkway from the station, a reply said head north; it looks like a raised road with planters, stairs and lifts.

  • Several people named Isaac Toast as the easy option. One noted that early market breakfasts are usually rice with spicy soup, lovely but not for everyone.

  • One reply was blunt: that early, choices are limited. Gwangjang Market gets going around 8:30 to 9, and the station has fast-food chains and a bakery near one exit.

  • The family came back with an update: a café breakfast on day one, then a hanok café that was calm and easy to get a table at.

Desk note The elevated park is Seoullo 7017, a 1,024-metre pedestrian walkway on the former Seoul Station overpass. It opened on 20 May 2017 and links towards Namdaemun Market, Myeongdong and Sungnyemun Gate, so it doubles as a flat walking route for a jet-lagged first morning.
