Lip Balm Before Lipstick: How to Apply It Without Slipping
On days when your lips are dry, lipstick can make flakes stand out or cause the color to look patchy. That’s why I apply lip balm first, but if you get the amount or timing wrong, the lipstick can end up sliding around and smudging.
Application order
- Apply one thin layer of lip balm: Spread a thin layer over your entire lips. There’s no need to apply it thickly before lipstick.
- Wait 1–2 minutes: Give the lip balm time to settle onto your lips. You can do the rest of your makeup in the meantime.
- Blot away excess oil: If the surface looks shiny, gently press a tissue against your lips once.
- Apply lipstick: Now apply the color.
What to do in these situations
- On days when you have a lot of flakes: Apply a generous layer of lip balm the night before and sleep with it on; your lips will be much smoother in the morning. Don’t pick off flakes with your fingers in the morning.
- When using matte lipstick: Matte products can feel drying, so the lip balm step is more important. Just be sure to do step 3 (blot away excess oil).
- When using a lip tint: Applying it over lip balm can make the color look lighter. If you want a more intense color, use less lip balm.
Reapplying during the day
Applying lip balm over lipstick can make the color smudge easily. Apply a little only to the inner part of your lips, or repeat the same steps when reapplying lipstick after a meal.
