Light sleeper in Myeongdong: can you find a quiet room and a good breakfast?
A first-time visitor on the Tripadvisor Seoul forum had picked the Myeongdong and Namdaemun area for six nights. Their must-haves were hard to combine: good soundproofing because of insomnia, a subway station close by, a breakfast buffet with both Western and Asian food, and ideally an airport bus stop nearby. Every hotel they checked seemed to have either quiet rooms and no breakfast, or a great breakfast and street noise.
What the replies said
-
One traveller suggested a suite-style hotel in the area that ticked many boxes, with a caveat: there had been construction across the street during their stay. It didn't bother them, but it might bother a light sleeper.
-
About a big-brand hotel the poster was considering: it sits on a fairly busy road, and you can't really know how noisy a room will be in advance.
-
The most realistic advice: you're staying in the middle of a major city, so ask for a quiet room on a high floor and hope for the best.
-
Later replies added a couple more names, including a serviced residence, without much detail on noise.
The thread didn't find a perfect answer, but it leaned towards choosing on room position rather than on the hotel name.
Desk note When noise matters, email the hotel before you book and ask three things: whether there is building work nearby, which side of the building the quieter rooms face, and whether a high-floor room away from the lift can be noted on the booking. The answers, and how quickly they come, tell you a lot.
Light sleepers: how do you pick a quiet room in a busy city?
