Deep under-the-skin spots and hard little plugs: one person's 'finally' story

On theqoo's beauty board, someone who had battled breakouts for months said things were finally calming down. Two types had been the worst: deep bumps that form under the surface, and spots that release a hard plug rather than soft sebum when squeezed. Creams had not helped much with either.

What the poster said worked for them:

  • For the deep bumps, they took a supplement with omega-3 and zinc daily and felt fewer appeared after more than three months.

  • For the hard plugs, which they put down to dead skin not shedding on time, switching to a daily BHA toner helped. A rub-off gommage exfoliant had made skin feel smoother but did nothing for breakouts.

The 12 replies:

  • One person had started omega-3 for other reasons and felt big inflamed spots became less frequent; another said breakouts return as soon as they stop vitamin D.

  • The poster's regret, that exfoliation should have come first during oily summer months, drew agreement.

  • Someone else had found the recommended BHA product too oily and stopped using it.

Desk note: Supplement results here are personal experience. The AAD describes studies suggesting diet may play a role (low-glycaemic eating, cow's milk) but concludes that diet alone is not enough; acne-friendly skin care and treatment are needed too. If you start supplements, check they do not clash with any medicines, and see a dermatologist for recurring inflamed breakouts.

What is the one habit that helped your breakouts most?

    1. DermNet explains that salicylic acid (BHA) helps break down blackheads and whiteheads and slows the shedding of cells inside the follicle so they are less likely to clog. It also notes that it can sting on broken skin and irritate healthy skin. Even a daily-use BHA toner can become too much when layered with other acid pads or serums, so keeping one exfoliating product per routine is the safer default. DermNet — Salicylic acid
