Men's base makeup that breaks down by mid-afternoon: how do you fix it?

An office worker posted in DCInside's perfume and cosmetics gallery. For about two years their routine was toner, essence, a foundation stick and a little contour. With a job change coming, they wondered whether wearing foundation every day still made sense. After around six hours, their T-zone gets shiny and the sides of the cheekbones go dry and patchy. Should they switch from a stick to a cushion or BB cream? Which powder? Is a tinted 'cover lotion' fine for work?

What the replies said

  • The most useful reply said to diagnose the breakdown first. If it cracks because skin is dry, that's a moisturising problem: spraying mist or adding foundation on top won't make it stick again.

  • If it slides off in oil, blot the oil gently with a tissue or kitchen paper, smooth the skin with a bit of cream or sunscreen, then re-apply a thin layer of foundation or cushion. It's doable in a restroom in minutes.

  • Powder, the same reply explained, mostly absorbs oil and doesn't change skin tone, so it isn't really a touch-up tool. For touch-ups, a tinted pressed-powder compact works better.

  • Foundation sticks are a solid formula and can pill or lift, but if it has looked natural with no pilling so far, there's no need to switch.

  • Another reply said the trend is 'no visible makeup', so an oily-skin cover lotion is fine for work. The poster thanked everyone and said they'd just manage the T-zone oil and cheekbone dryness.

Desk note: The thread's key point: the fix is the opposite depending on whether your base fails from dryness or from oil. Oil means remove and go thinner; dryness means sorting out morning moisturising. Several people said that piling new product on top during the day makes pilling more likely. If your skin stings or breaks out more after wearing base, give the products a break and look at your skin first.

Guys who wear base: do you touch up during the day, or is it once in the morning and done?
