K-beauty lookalikes: how to tell a Korean brand from a 'Korean-style' one

A post on r/AsianBeauty asking whether a set of toner pads was an 'AB marketing scam' drew more than 140 comments. The poster had noticed near-identical rave reviews across TikTok, including promo videos featuring AI-generated people. The Korean-sounding brand sold only on Amazon and TikTok Shop, and tracing the seller pointed to what looked like a US company.

What the replies said

  • Commenters who said they were Korean had never heard of the brand, and some noted the logo lettering was styled to look like Hangul, awkwardly.

  • Many suspected undisclosed sponsorship: the same phrases ("the ingredient list is insane") repeated account after account.

  • A few who tried the pads called them an ordinary niacinamide pad that felt overpriced.

  • Some said they'd skip anything sold only on Amazon or TikTok Shop. The thread settled into wariness about products styled to look Korean without being Korean.

Desk note The US FDA's labelling guide says that if the company named on the label isn't the manufacturer, the name must be qualified with phrases like "Manufactured for" or "Distributed by", and imports must state the country of origin in English. To check where something comes from, read the origin and manufacturer lines rather than the brand name. The FTC also asks creators to disclose paid or gifted endorsements inside the video.

Does it matter to you whether 'K-beauty style' is actually made in Korea?
