Seochon and Tongui-dong: wandering Seoul’s quietest historic alleys
Seochon, tucked against the western wall of Gyeongbokgung, is one of Seoul's oldest neighborhoods, and unlike Bukchon it hasn't turned into a tourist set piece. People still shop and walk their dogs among low hanok houses, small galleries and craft studios, which makes it a natural next step for anyone who's already seen Bukchon and wants quieter alleys.
Seochon covers Tongui-dong, Tongin-dong, Chebu-dong, Ogin-dong and Sajik-dong, where hundreds of hanok sit alongside galleries, cafes and workshops. Tongui-dong in particular was home to Korean art and literary figures — painter Lee Jung-seop and poet Yun Dong-ju both lived nearby, and buildings like the old Boan Inn, where artists once stayed, still stand as converted cultural spaces. A common route with no fixed order links writer Yi Sang's house, the century-old Daeo Bookstore, the small Park Ro-su municipal gallery, Suseongdong Valley and finishes at Tongin Market, known for its "old coin" system where you fill a tray with fried tteokbokki and other snacks.
People who've written about the area say wandering it without a fixed route is part of the appeal, though a few flag that Tongin Market changed its regular closing day starting April 2026, so it's worth checking before you go. Several also note that the smaller galleries and workshops tend to close early in the afternoon.
Practical info: Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3), Exits 2, 3 or 4, puts you right at Seochon's northern edge. The city's suggested full route runs about 8km and 3 hours, but it's easy to shorten. The streets themselves are free; Tongin Market and individual galleries keep their own hours.
Nearby: Gyeongbokgung itself is right over the wall, and the Sejong Village food street is a short walk away.
Have you wandered Seochon without a fixed route — what corner surprised you the most?
