Had moles removed and they are still there: is one session never enough?

On theqoo's beauty board, someone had several moles removed two weeks earlier and kept them covered with hydrocolloid patches, only to find the moles had not gone, just faded a little. The doctor had warned that deep moles cannot be removed in one go and had booked a touch-up in three months, but seeing every single one still there felt deflating.

The 13 replies mostly said: that is normal.

  • The most common explanation was that deep-rooted moles need several sessions so the skin does not end up pitted and the mole does not come back. Some said three or four sessions.

  • Several warned that going deep in one session can leave a dent or a keloid scar. One person had moles dug out in one go as a child and ended up with scars and the moles anyway.

  • Some said that as the deeper part surfaces, a mole can look darker at first.

  • On the other side, some still had traces after more than five sessions, or saw a mole reappear in the same spot, and one had a mole become raised after aggressive treatment and was told it would need surgery.

  • The thread ended with a simple tip: go back within the touch-up window.

Desk note: There is also a check to do before removal. The AAD lists warning signs of melanoma as ABCDE: asymmetry, an irregular border, several colours, a diameter usually larger than 6 mm, and a spot that is evolving in size, shape or colour. A new spot, one that looks different from your others, or one that itches or bleeds should be seen by a board-certified dermatologist before anyone removes it.

How many sessions did it take before you were happy with a mole removal?
