How to Choose a Hydrating Serum, and How Is It Different from a Hydrating Ampoule?

Serums, ampoules, essences. They have different names, but they all come in similar bottles, and they all say “hydrating.” It’s only natural to be confused about what to buy.

To get straight to the point, the full ingredient list and when you use it matter more than the name.

There are no actual rules for serums and ampoules

There are no separate legal standards for distinguishing serums, ampoules, and essences. Each brand uses the terms differently. Ampoules are often thought of as “more concentrated, used in small amounts,” and essences as “watery, used as the first step,” but it varies from product to product. So if you choose based on the name alone, it’s easy to end up buying the same thing twice.

Look for these three things in a hydrating serum

Three things to look for when choosing a hydrating serum

1. Are there ingredients near the top that help hold onto moisture? Ingredients like glycerin, butylene glycol, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate). They attract and retain moisture.

2. Are there also ingredients to keep moisture from evaporating? Moisture alone evaporates quickly. If it’s paired with ceramides or lightweight plant oils, the hydrated feeling lasts longer.

3. When is the product meant to be applied? The right texture depends on whether you’ll use it as the first step right after cleansing or after toner. If it’s for the first step, a lightweight formula that spreads easily on damp skin is convenient.

If you have oily, dehydrated skin, go lighter

If your skin is shiny on the surface but feels tight underneath—oily, dehydrated skin—a lightweight hydrating serum used generously first, followed by a light finishing layer, may feel more comfortable than a heavy cream.
