Samcheong-dong Street: an old-meets-new gallery walk from Anguk Station
Samcheong-dong Street runs for about two kilometers between Anguk Station and the northern edge of Gyeongbokgung, and it's the easiest way to see Seoul's old-meets-new look in one walk: hanok roofs, low stone walls and narrow alleys sit right next to contemporary galleries, design cafes and boutiques. It works well either as its own outing or tacked onto a Bukchon or Gyeongbokgung visit, since all three sit within a few minutes of each other.
The street itself has no single attraction to tick off; the appeal is the mix. Kukje Gallery, a well-known contemporary art space at 54 Samcheong-ro, is often mentioned for its minimalist facade, and the surrounding blocks hold a rotating set of small galleries, antique shops and craft stores tucked between cafes. Several guides describe the light filtering through the buildings on a clear day as especially photogenic, particularly in the side alleys off the main road.
People who've walked it recommend going on a weekday or early on weekend mornings, since the narrow street gets crowded with both pedestrians and cars later in the day. A common route pairs Anguk Station, Samcheong-dong Street, Samcheong Park and Bukchon Hanok Village into a half-day loop.
Practical info: nearest station is Anguk (Line 3); most of the street is a walkable 5-10 minutes from the exits. No admission fee for the street itself — individual galleries and cafes set their own hours. Naver Map or Kakao Map tend to be more reliable here than Google Maps.
Nearby: Bukchon Hanok Village is a short uphill walk (note its 10am-5pm tourism-visit hours), and Gyeongbokgung's east gate is at the southern end of the street.
