Shinsegae Department Store Myeongdong Main: how to work the duty-free floors and food hall

If you only have half a day and want a department store, a duty-free floor and a proper Korean food hall in one stop, Shinsegae's Myeongdong main building is the easy pick. It sits right by Myeongdong Station, and floors 8 through 12 hold Shinsegae's duty-free area — official sources say this section was rebranded in 2025 — carrying Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton and a mix of Korean beauty brands, while the lower floors run as a regular department store.

A workable route: go up to the top duty-free floor first while you're fresh, work your way down, then finish on the basement food floor, which several travel write-ups single out as one of the better places in the neighbourhood for Korean snacks and lunch boxes without a street queue.

Across reviews and forum threads, a few points come up again and again: staff speak several languages and the tax-refund desk is described as smoother than expected; foreign visitors are often offered an extra discount and a coffee coupon; but weekends and afternoons get crowded fast, and more than one reviewer suggests going right when doors open. A few mention slow checkout lines at busy counters, so having your shopping list ready helps.

Practical info: the main building is at 77 Toegye-ro, Jung-gu (서울 중구 퇴계로 77), a short walk from Myeongdong Station (Line 4) or Hoehyeon Station; duty-free floors run into the evening on weekdays and a little later Friday–Sunday, though hours shift so check the day of; tax refunds are handled at in-store counters with your passport, and it's worth checking ahead whether pickup needs a reservation in busy periods.

Nearby: Myeongdong's main shopping street is right outside, and Namdaemun Market is a short walk south if you want an older-school market after the department store.

When you shop duty-free, do you head straight for beauty counters or the luxury floor first?
