A suitcase full of Korean cosmetics: is there a limit on the way home?

This Tripadvisor Seoul forum thread is older, but the question still comes up before every beauty-shopping trip. A traveller planning four or five days in Seoul asked two things: are there sale seasons for cosmetics, and would a suitcase mostly full of cosmetics cause trouble at customs? Is there a limit in quantity or litres for checked bags?

What the replies said

  • The practical limit is your airline's baggage weight allowance, not a cosmetics rule.

  • When you land at home, you may need to declare what you bought. The poster asked how that works and whether there are fees; the answer was that it depends entirely on your own country's rules, which also set any charge.

  • Put all cosmetics in checked luggage. One reply specifically warned that face masks count as liquids in hand luggage.

  • The first question, about sale seasons, got no answer at all.

The thread agreed on the basics but left the key point, your home country's allowance, for each traveller to look up.

Desk note As one example of a home-country rule: U.S. Customs and Border Protection says travellers arriving from anywhere other than a U.S. insular possession may bring back US$800 worth of items duty free, as long as the items come with them. Other countries set their own allowances, so check your customs authority's site before you shop, and keep receipts together in case you need to declare.

How do you pack a big beauty haul so it gets home intact and within the rules?

    1. On the carry-on side, Incheon Airport's own rule: each liquid container in hand luggage must be 100 ml or less, judged by the container size rather than how much is left inside, and all of them must fit in one transparent 20 × 20 cm zip bag per person. Its examples include toner, lotion, sunscreen and lip gloss. Full-size bottles and big boxes of sheet masks are safer in the checked bag. Incheon Airport: carry-on restrictions
