That product didn't suit your face? How people use it up instead of binning it

A practical thread in r/KoreanBeauty. The poster hates throwing away products that don't agree with them, and shared their own tricks: a cream too thick for the face goes on hands and elbows, a snail essence that caused breakouts tames hair flyaways, a retinol too harsh for the face goes on rough ankles and feet, rejected sunscreens go on the body, lip masks become cuticle cream, cleansing balms work as a pre-shower mask for rough patches, so-so toners soak sheet masks, and perfume freshens the bathroom. Then they asked for everyone else's.

What the replies said

  • Serums that broke someone out get mixed into body lotion. One person said a centella serum mixed this way helped the bumpy skin on their upper arms.

  • Heavy face creams double as an overnight lip mask.

  • Toners go into a spray bottle to mist the body, so lotion can go on damp skin even when you have not just showered.

  • Exfoliating toners and pads get used under the arms between showers.

  • Cleansers and cleansing oils become shaving aids; sheet masks that don't suit the face go on the neck, chest, elbows or heels.

  • Perfume becomes a linen spray.

  • One person found a much-loved essence did nothing for their face, but their body skin loved it.

Desk note: Body skin often tolerates what the face won't, but a few limits apply. Keep exfoliating acids and retinoids away from freshly shaved or broken skin, where they sting. Don't move a product that caused a real reaction (swelling, hives, burning) to another body part; stop using it. And skip anything past its date or that smells or looks different from when you opened it.

What's your best second life for a product that didn't work?

    1. One formulation note on the "mix it into body lotion" trick: diluting a serum lowers the concentration of whatever irritated you, which is partly why it feels gentler. But the preservative system and pH were designed for each product on its own, so mixing a big batch in the bottle can change texture or stability. Safer to mix a small amount in your palm right before use, and don't stir an acid serum into a lotion you plan to keep.
