Can K-beauty be trusted? A Japanese Q&A got 230 answers
In late August 2026, a very short question went up on the Q&A board of @cosme, Japan's big beauty review site: "I have never used Korean cosmetics. Can I trust them?" In less than a month it passed 230 answers.
What the replies said
- The most common answer: "it depends on the product" and "like Japanese products, it comes down to whether it suits you"
- Many said Korean skincare tends to be simple and light, and they like it
- A cautious group said there seems to be a lot of stealth marketing, so they dig through reviews before buying
- Several warned that "improvement rates" on product pages come from brands' own tests, not public bodies
- For sensitive skin: be extra careful with base makeup and start with small sizes
- Some said they trust anything that is officially sold in Japan
Overall, most answers came from people who use Korean products without problems; the "I don't use them" and "half-convinced" camps were small.
Desk note According to JETRO, imported cosmetics sold in Japan must be handled by a company holding a cosmetics marketing licence, meet Japan's cosmetic standards, and list all ingredients on the container. Korean products are no exception. Buying directly from overseas as a personal import falls outside that system, so where you buy matters too.
What makes you trust (or not trust) a K-beauty product?
