Why Your Lips Get Dry Again Soon After Applying Lip Balm: It’s Easier When You Know What Causes Chapped Lips
I definitely applied lip balm in the morning, but by lunchtime my lips feel tight again. By the afternoon, the edges of my lips are flaking white. Is it because my lip balm isn’t very good? Not necessarily. Lips are naturally the part of your face that dries out the fastest.
There are hardly any places on the lips that create an oil barrier
The skin on your face produces sebum, which creates a thin oil barrier on its own. But the lips have almost no sebaceous glands. The outer skin is thin, too. So they’re naturally not very well equipped to prevent moisture from evaporating.
On top of that, we use our lips all day long. Talking, eating, drinking coffee, wiping them with a tissue. It’s only natural that the lip balm you apply disappears faster than you might expect.
If there are days when your lips get especially chapped
These things can overlap and make dry lips much worse.
- Spending a long time outdoors on a cold, windy day
- Staying indoors with the heat on all day
- Putting on and taking off a mask for a long time
- Frequently licking your lips because they feel dry
The last one is especially problematic. Wetting them with saliva may make them feel moisturized for a moment, but as the saliva dries, it takes moisture with it. This creates a vicious cycle where the more you lick your lips, the drier they get.
That’s why it’s important for lip balm to “stay on for a long time”
If your lips dry out quickly, it’s much easier to switch to a highly moisturizing lip balm that stays on longer than to apply lip balm more often. The key is whether oils or butters are listed in generous amounts near the beginning of the ingredient list. I’ll cover how to choose one in detail in the next post.
If your lips are cracked and bleeding, or haven’t improved for several weeks, there may be another cause besides dryness. In that case, get them checked by a dermatologist.
