Brown, acne-prone skin and a peel in Seoul: what did travellers suggest?

A traveller with brown, acne-prone skin asked on the Tripadvisor Seoul forum: they'd be in Seoul in spring and wanted a face peel. Could anyone point to a reliable clinic?

What the replies said

  • The most useful answer suggested looking at gentler peel types, such as LHA or the lighter PHA, and said an aqua-peel style hydrating facial is an option if the goal is mostly hydration.

  • The same reply noted Gangnam has a high density of skin clinics, and admitted the poster had no experience with darker skin specifically.

  • Another reply said to read reviews, then phone a couple of clinics and see whether the consultation feels right.

  • Other travellers joined only to ask where the original poster ended up. There was no follow-up, and one reply was removed by the community.

The thread leaned towards "go mild and ask questions", but nobody could vouch for a clinic with real experience of darker skin.

Desk note The American Academy of Dermatology says people with skin of colour can have chemical peels safely, but should see a dermatologist with expertise in treating darker skin tones; without that knowledge, permanent pigment problems can develop. A fair question at any consultation: how often do you treat skin like mine, and what do you change for it?

If you have a darker skin tone, what did a clinic do or ask that made you trust them, or walk away?

    1. One sun-related detail from a study reported by ScienceDaily: among 132 patients with darker skin who had 473 chemical peels, fewer than four percent had unwanted effects, mainly crusting, dark spots and redness. Side effects were least likely in winter, which the researchers linked to less sun exposure. On a spring or summer trip, ask the clinic how to protect peeled skin while you are out sightseeing all day. ScienceDaily
