Lip balm is applied right above the mouth, so its scent can seem stronger than you might expect. If the scent bothers you or your lips are sensitive, you may look for an unscented lip balm.

“Unscented” and “fragrance-free” can mean different things

• Fragrance-free: Means that no “fragrance” was added to give the product a scent.
• Unscented: Means that it has little to no smell. However, even without fragrance, the oils or waxes themselves may have a faint scent.

So it’s more reliable to check the ingredient list yourself than to go by the wording on the box.

What to check in the ingredient list

1. The word “fragrance”: If “fragrance” appears in the ingredient list, the product has fragrance added.
