How do you get a tax refund on cosmetics bought in Korea? The difference between instant tax refunds and airport tax refunds

Simply put: Instant in-store tax refunds save you steps, while airport tax refunds are better for purchases that can't be processed on the spot. But not every store or purchase qualifies. Before checking out, look for a Tax Free sign at the entrance or checkout counter, and ask a store employee.

      • Instant tax refund(즉시환급): Show your passport. If the store and purchase meet the requirements, you pay the tax-refunded amount directly at checkout. This saves you from waiting in line at the airport. If your passport details or purchase amount don't meet the requirements, the employee may issue a tax refund form instead.
      • Airport tax refund(공항 환급): Show your passport when shopping to get a tax refund form, then follow the airport instructions when departing. You may need to scan your passport or tax refund form. If you need to check the items in, first confirm whether customs needs to inspect them before you check them in; don't put the items straight into your checked baggage.

Useful Korean phrases: 택스리펀드 돼요?(Can I get a tax refund?) and즉시환급 가능해요? (Can I get an instant tax refund?). Airport procedures, counter locations, and available refund methods may change. Before departure, check the official information from the airport and tax refund operator, and keep your passport, receipts, and items.

Usually, no extra airport refund step is needed for a store instant refund (즉시환급), and you generally won’t be asked to show the items just because you used it. Keep the receipts and any tax-refund documents handy until you leave, though. Customs can still request an inspection, and rules or checks can vary by airport and purchase, so don’t pack everything somewhere inaccessible—especially before checking in. If the store actually issued a refund slip instead of applying the refund at checkout, that’s airport refund (공항 환급), which follows a different process. Check the slip or ask the shop which type you received.
